During these fasting days a so-called sacrifice was offered. Later this fast was extended to forty days.

Fasting can be divided into two aspects - qualitative fasting, which tells what Christians can eat, and quantitative fasting, which tells how much food they can consume. What is a strict fast? Strict fasting It combines qualitative and quantitative fasting. The qualitative fast excludes meat and all meat-based foods such as broth from the diet. According to the Christian religion, a qualitative fast is obligatory for everyone over the age of seven every Friday - the day on which, according to the Christian religion, the Son of God died.

Qualitative fasting allows you to eat animal products such as eggs, dairy products and fish and shellfish. Quantitative fasting allows you to eat one meal a day, which will satiate you, but does not prohibit you from eating in the morning and evening, but small portions that will not allow you to overeat. The quantitative fast is obligatory for Christians from eighteen to sixty years of age in Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

During the quantitative fasting, meat may be eaten at one meal a day, with which one may eat to satiety. However, in case of small, morning and evening meals, meat consumption is forbidden. In order to keep a fast, it is easiest to follow the rule of eating one third of what you usually eat for breakfast or dinner.

Quantitative fasting applies to Christians on all other days of Lent except Fridays. Quantitative fasting applies during Lent on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays (except Ash Wednesday and Dry Day, during which strict fasting applies) and Thursdays. Quantitative fasting is obligatory for Christians who have reached the age of 21 and have not yet entered their 60th year.

Table of contents

Toggle

What to eat at Easter and why these particular dishes?

What foods must be included in a holy day?

What to eat at Easter and why these particular dishes?

What on Easter?
