Was Mary the wife of Joseph? The dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary has many intricate threads that may seem contradictory at first glance. All the contradictions, however, are explained in Scripture, where we find all the answers. Was Mary, being a virgin, married to Joseph? Mary kept her virginity both before and after the birth of Christ.
For the Immaculate Conception is a privilege that established an exception to original sin, from which Mary was redeemed. The Virgin Mary had already promised, before the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel, to keep her virginity, and to fully consecrate herself to God. During the Annunciation, one also accepted the obligation to marry Joseph, as an expression of God's mysterious will.
This would seem to be a contradiction to the sanctified state that the Holy Spirit sent upon her. This contradiction was clarified when the Angel proclaimed to her the Word of God that she would be Mother and Virgin at the same time, being a sign of the Incarnation, and that she would follow the path of the full vocation of virginity. Joseph Of Nazareth is traditionally called the Bridegroom of God.
Let us not forget his role, because he was also chosen by God himself as the protector of Christ, the protector of the Holy Family. Joseph is considered the patron of Christian marriages and families. Church Catholic puts Joseph as an example of obedience and devotion to God, an example of faith, diligence, fortitude and justice. He is recognized as a saint.
