Why Joseph and Mary went Bethlehem? What is the journey of the Holy Family, during which the Saviour was born? This is purely historical. To begin with, the period we are talking about is during the reign of the Roman Empire in the land of Israel. At that time, so-called censuses were common in those regions.

By order of Emperor Augustus, the ruler at the time, such a census was to take place in the state of Joseph and Mary. The grand ruler in the Syrian territories was Quirinius. Accordingly, every inhabitant at a certain time had to go to his city. Among them was also Joseph, who went from the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem. This was determined by Joseph's descent from the House of David. He had to go there with the previously married Mary, who was pregnant and carrying the baby Jesus. Above all, Joseph was the guardian of the Holy Family, so he did not leave her side. During their stay in the city of Bethlehem, the solution took place and the Savior was born.

That is why today Bethlehem is associated by all Christians with this great and wonderful event, which was undoubtedly the birth of Jesus Christand to whom Bethlehem owes its fame. In addition to the census, it is also significant that it was God He wanted to protect his Son from the hostility of people who might encounter him in Nazareth. He wanted to protect the Holy Family from the hostility coming from the elite of the day.
