Did Mary die? Did Mary die, fall asleep, or immediately go to heaven with the Holy Spirit? This topic is often discussed by Christians and is directly related to the concept of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption is another miracle bestowed upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and once again highlights her special role in the Christian religion. It is the act of the Virgin Mary's ascension into the Kingdom of Heaven together with her soul and body at the end of her earthly existence. In the Roman Catholic Church, this constitutes one of the dogmas of the faith.

The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church on August 15. However, the dogma itself and the Church's teachings nowhere explicitly state the fact of Mary's earthly death. In this regard, theologians are divided into two groups: mortalists, who recognize the earthly death of the Mother of God, and immortalists, who oppose it.

The indispensable fact is that Mary, like Jesus Christ has a human, and therefore mortal, nature. Mortalists insist that Mary had a body identical to Jesus', which was mortal and subject to pain and suffering. It must have died before the ascension. Immortalists emphasize, however, that there is no historical evidence or proof of her actual death. They also emphasize its special role. Mortalists and Immortalists can only be reconciled by the widely accepted fact that Mary fell asleep before being raised. Insofar as death occurred, it was somewhat different from the death of an ordinary human being. Mary did not succumb to the restraints of death.
